Miley Ray Cyrus is an American actress, singer and songwriter. She is perhaps best known for starring as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel Original Series, Hannah Montana.

In December 2007, she was ranked #17 in the list of Forbes Top twenty earners under 25 with an annual earning of US$3.5 million. As of December 2007, she is working on a movie spin-off from Hannah Montana, titled Hannah Montana: The Movie which is due to be released late 2008 or early 2009.
Cyrus was born in Franklin, Tennessee, the daughter of Leticia "Tish" (née Finley) and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, and the granddaughter of the late Ron Cyrus. She has two elder half-brothers, Christopher Cody and Trace, the latter being the vocalist and guitarist of an electronic rock band, Metro Station in California. She also has an older half-sister, Brandi, a younger brother, Braison, and a younger sister, Noah, who is also an actress. She was named Destiny Hope because her parents believed that she would accomplish great things. Cyrus gained her nickname "Miley" because she kept smiling ("Smiley") as a youngster.
Cyrus attended Heritage Middle School, and now has a private tutor. She grew up on her parents` farm outside of Nashville.
Cyrus became interested in acting at age nine when the family briefly lived in Toronto, Canada. Her first acting role was as a guest star on her father`s television series Doc, in which she played a girl named Kylie. According to Disney Channel Executive Vice President Gary Marsh, Cyrus was chosen for Hannah Montana because of her energetic and lively performance and was seen as a person who "loves every minute of life", with the "everyday relatability of Hilary Duff and the stage presence of Shania Twain". She spent several years to get rid of her Southern accent, but in the end Disney wanted her to revive it. Later in an unusual twist, Cyrus had to audition her own father, Billy Ray Cyrus, to see if he would fit the role as Hannah`s dad. Cyrus currently stars in Hannah Montana as the lead character Miley Stewart, whose alter ego is the pop music sensation Hannah Montana. Cyrus also performs in character as Hannah Montana for albums and concerts.
In 2004, Cyrus became a spokesperson for Daisy Rock Guitars, when she was presented with her first Daisy Rock guitar— the Stardust Series Acoustic Electric Pink Sparkle. It was given to her by her parents from her father`s Country Music Television fan meet-and-greet when she was twelve years old.

When Cyrus was twelve, she auditioned for the role of "best friend" in a Disney Channel television show about a "secret pop star".[22] Disney Channel executives judged her to be too young, however Cyrus' persistence resulted in her being called back for further auditions. She eventually auditioned for the lead role, Zoe Stewart. When she won the role, the character's name was changed to Miley Stewart. According to Disney Channel president Gary Marsh, Cyrus was chosen because of her energetic and lively performance and was seen as a person who "loves every minute of life,"[23] with the "everyday relatability [sic] of Hilary Duff and the stage presence of Shania Twain."[18] Cyrus tried for several years to lose her Southern accent, however Disney later decided to include it in the storyline. Cyrus sits in make-up on the set of The Last Song. Cyrus' role was imagined as a way to introduce her to older audiences.
In June 2009, Cyrus changed her TV and movie career representation from United Talent Agency to Creative Artists Agency, which had already represented her for music.[52] Also in June, Cyrus began filming her upcoming movie The Last Song, based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, in which she plays a rebellious teenage girl who spends a summer with her estranged father at his home in a quiet beach town. It is scheduled for release in 2010 and filming ended post 2009 Teen Choice Awards.[53] The film was conceived as a "star vehicle" with the intention of introducing Cyrus to an older audiences.[54] Cyrus recorded a song with the Jonas Brothers titled "Before the Storm" for their fourth studio album Lines, Vines and Trying Times. She also launched another Hannah Montana soundtrack (for the third season), titled Hannah Montana 3 on July 7, 2009 which brought her her first top ten as Montana and her fourth overall, "He Could Be the One."[55]

It is also the highest debut by a female solo artist since Carrie Underwood's 2005 song "Inside Your Heaven", which debuted at number one.[59][60] The song thereby became the "fastest breaking single in Hollywood Records' history."[59]

Eventually moreor dates were announced for the United Kingdom making the tour change names to the "2009/2010 World Tour." Cyrus became a spokesperson for Daisy Rock Guitars in 2004, when she was presented with her first Daisy Rock guitar — the Stardust Series Acoustic Electric Pink Sparkle.[64] Disney released a Hannah Montana clothing collection in late summer 2007. Cyrus helped to design some of the pieces from the collection.[65] In December 2007, she was ranked #17 in the list of Forbes Top Twenty Superstar Earners under 25 with an annual earning of US$3.5 million.[66] A wax figure of Cyrus was unveiled at Madame Tussauds in New York City.[67] In April 2008, Cyrus signed a contract to pen an autobiography reflecting on her life up to the age of 16. The memoir, called Miles To Go (ISBN 978-1-42-311992-0) was written with Hilary Liftin[68] and was published by Disney-Hyperion Books in March 2009. The memoir discusses Cyrus' relationship with her father, her thoughts on the media, her love life, her future ambitions and milestones she still has to reach in her life.[69] Miles to Go reached #1 on the New York Times children’s best seller list.[70] An initial printing run of one million copies of Miles to Go is planned.[71]
In August 2009, Cyrus teamed with Max Azria to create a line of junior and girls' separates available only at Walmart.[72] Cyrus' released her EP The Time of Our Lives in conjunction with the line and Walmart dedicated a page to the designers.[73] The line consists of vests, tie-dye tank tops, dresses, and plaids. Critics claimed the clothes were "completely inoffensive but totally snoozeworthy"[74] and "benign",[72] but admited that "it's the generic that sells, regardless of whether it has Hannah Montana's name on it" and predicted they would be high sellers.[72]
Philanthropy
Cyrus celebrated her 16th birthday with a charity fundraiser at Disneyland, which was closed early for the event attended by 5,000 fans at $250 per ticket.[75] The proceeds went to the charity Youth Service America, a youth volunteering organization.[76][77][78] Ten outstanding youth volunteers from Youth Service America were invited to attend,[79] and later in the evening, Cyrus presented a $1 million check to the organization.[80] In 2007, Cyrus made a large contribution to the City of Hope, giving $1 for every "Hannah Montana" concert ticket sold. She said that "the cool thing about being a part of City of Hope is that they are a cancer research center. They're not only helping kids that are there, but also finding out how they can heal them by figuring out what exactly is going on, which is amazing."[81]
Cyrus has lent her musical talents to several charity benefits. Cyrus collaborated with fourteen other female singers to record a charity single titled "Just Stand Up!", which the singers performed live during a one-hour primetime event for the anti-cancer campaign Stand Up to Cancer on September 5, 2008.[82] On September 14, 2008, Cyrus, along with other performers, performed at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California for the City of Hope Benefit Concert to help raise money for cancer research and training programs.[83]
Cyrus is involved in Disney's Friends for Change, an organization which promotes environmently-friendly behavior, and appears in the service's public service announcements to raise awareness for the cause on the Disney Channel.[84] In addition, she joined fellow Disney stars Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and the Jonas Brothers, to record "Send It On", a charity single which serves as the theme song for Disney's Friends for Change. Send it On debuted on the Hot 100 at number twenty.[85][86] Disney will direct 100% of the proceeds from "Send it On" to environmental charities through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF).[85]
Personal life
Cyrus with dancers Ashlee Nino and best friend, Mandy Jiroux.
In January 2008, Cyrus announced her intent to officially change her name to "Miley Ray Cyrus," her middle name reflecting that of her father.[87] The name change became official on May 1, 2008.[1] In an interview with USA Today, Cyrus was quoted as saying her faith is "the main thing" and is the reason why she works in Hollywood.[88] When interviewed by Parade, she added that she attends church regularly with her family.[24] In an interview with Christianity Today, Billy Ray Cyrus said, "Being Christian, we believe in heaven," and "We also had a great church, and when you give up your church, your pastor, and the community you are involved in, you're making a big sacrifice. Let's face it, Hollywood is a completely different environment than Franklin, Tennessee."[89]
In February 2008, Cyrus and her friend Mandy Jiroux (who is also a backup dancer for Cyrus) began creating videos on YouTube called The Miley and Mandy Show. The show, described as a "YouTube hit," is said to be filmed for fun by Cyrus and Jiroux and to be entirely their work, with Cyrus and Jiroux editing the footage together. It is filmed mainly in Cyrus' bedroom.[90] In the September 2008 issue of Seventeen, Cyrus stated she had been in a relationship with Nick Jonas for two years, and that they "were in love." They broke up at the end of 2007.[91] In June 2009, Cyrus ended a nine month long relationship with Nashville Star contestant and model Justin Gaston.[92]
Controversies
Vanity Fair photos
On April 25, 2008, the televised entertainment program Entertainment Tonight reported that Cyrus had posed topless for a photoshoot with Vanity Fair.[93] The photo, and subsequently released behind-the-scenes photos, show Cyrus with her bare back exposed but her front covered with a bedsheet. The photoshoot was taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz.[94] The full photograph was published with an accompanying story on The New York Times' website on April 27, 2008. On April 29, 2008, The New York Times clarified that though the pictures left an impression that she was bare-breasted, Cyrus was wrapped in a bedsheet and was actually not topless.[95] Some parents expressed outrage at the nature of the photograph, which a Disney spokesperson described as "a situation [that] was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines." Gary Marsh, president of entertainment for Disney Channel Worldwide, was quoted by Portfolio magazine to have said, “For Miley Cyrus to be a ‘good girl’ is now a business decision for her. Parents have invested in her a godliness. If she violates that trust, she won’t get it back.”[95] Branding consultants John Tantillo and Michael Stone appeared on Fox Business News to discuss possible repercussions for Cyrus' brand and her best marketing strategy going forward.[96]
In response to the Internet circulation of the photo and ensuing media attention, Cyrus released a statement of apology on April 27, 2008: "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."[95] Leibovitz also released a statement: "I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful."[95][97] On April 28, 2008, Vanity Fair published their full interview and photo shoot with Cyrus and her father Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as the behind-the-scenes photographs, on their website.[98] According to the interview, Cyrus' parents and/or minders were present during the entire duration of the photo shoot. The idea to pose with the sheets on was suggested by Leibovitz. When asked if she was "anxious" about the pose, Cyrus stated to interviewer Bruce Handy: "No, I mean I had a big blanket on. And I thought, this looks pretty, and really natural. I think it's really artsy. It wasn't in a skanky way.... And you can't say no to Annie. She's so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you're like, okay."[98] On December 2, 2008, TV Guide reported that Cyrus is interested in working with Leibovitz again in the future and is even considering a career in photography for herself, "That's what I want to do with my life. I would love to be a photographer... I want to come to London to study. I hear there are some great art schools here so I would love to do that."[99]
2009 Teen Choice Awards performance
Main article: Party in the U.S.A.#Live performances
Cyrus performed "Party in the U.S.A." at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards on August 10, and incited controversy due to the performance themes.[100][101][102] Critics of the performance complained that she danced provocatively, performed along on a dance pole that was on top of an ice-cream pushcart and that one theme seemed to be her poking fun at American culture.[101][102][103][104] Some drew negative similarities to Britney Spears; meanwhile Cyrus welcomed them.[103][105] Others defended Cyrus, saying that people should not be focused on still images that make the performance more sexual than it really was, instead of her earning six awards.[106][107] The Walt Disney Company tried to maintain distance from the performance.[38][108][109][110]
FilmographyI am fully committed to Hannah Montana. It's what gave me this amazing opportunity to reach out to so many people," Cyrus tells PEOPLE, adding, "I couldn't do it alone. We have an amazing cast that is so supportive, including my dad who has been there for me every step of the way."
Over the weekend reports circulated that Cyrus, 15, and her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, have been causing drama on the Disney Channel set by coming to work late and openly talking about wanting to get fired. There were also rumors of a rift between Miley and her costar Emily Osment.
A Disney Channel rep calls talk of on-set squabbles "just gossip," while a source close to Miley Cyrus says: "It's a lot of craziness."
"Miley is really devoted to the show and she's really upset by the gossip," continues the source. "Miley is never late to work. Every minute of her day is planned out. When she's not shooting the movie or the series, she's recording the [Hannah Montana] soundtrack. She has a lot invested in Hannah Montana. It's not going away any time soon."
On set "they're like a big family," says the source. "Emily and Miley are like sisters. Occasionally they have disagreements but they make up and they never let it effect their work."
While Cyrus is no stranger to the rumor mill – she was recently spotted with aspiring country singer Justin Gaston sparking buzz about a budding relationship – "she's used to all of the gossip about her personal life, but when people are attacking her professionalism, it upsets her because she works really hard," says the source.
Production for the third season of Hannah Montana began last month and the network has the contractual option to film a fourth season in the future. Starting in November, new episodes will start airing including one in which Dancing with the Stars contestant Cody Linley will return as Miley's on-screen ex-boyfriend Jake Ryan.
"I'm really excited about our new season," Miley tells PEOPLE. "We are making great new episodes that I can't wait for our fans to see."

Miley Cyrus isn't frantic to find a boyfriend, but that doesn’t mean the Hannah Montana star doesn't check out eye candy online.
Denying rumors that she's been searching the Net for a new beau, Cyrus, 15, told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM show, "I'm not that desperate yet" – but she did joke that she "might go on the Abercrombie [& Fitch] Web site" every once in a while for a good look.
Cyrus also came clean on sometimes thinking of ways to punk the paparazzi Ashton Kutcher-style. Calling the frenzy that surrounds her "pretty insane," Cyrus said photographers just sit outside her house all day.
Asked about reports that the paps have more interest in her than they do in Britney Spears, modest Miley almost sounded apologetic, telling Seacrest, "I kinda I feel bad, 'cause I'm a lot more boring than Britney Spears. We don't do anything. We just go to Coffee Bean."
The selected album does not contain any photos.
